Giromagny ⇒ Nyon
We are over halfway through our route to Nice and have arrived at the fifth section: The Jura. This ancient karst mountain range lies on the Swiss and French sides of the border, but the GR5 will mainly stay on the French side where it will follow the Swiss border for large stretches. Large parts of the Jura are forested with oaks and beeches and higher up also pines. The peaks of the Jura are higher than those of the Vosges, but a lot lower than those of the Alps. We walk the Jura for 230 km all the way to Lake Geneva at Nyon. Here we take the boat across: to the French side and also the Alps.
But before we get to the Jura we will first walk +/- 80 km through the Burgundy Gateway or ‘Trouée de Belfort’: a flat area between the Vosges and the Jura. We will do this in three stages.
The Jura is completely new to us. So we are very curious what the mountains are going to be like.
