This varied walk begins with a stretch along the road. Then alternates through woods with open areas and views, and ends at the beautiful ruins of Beaufort. This hike isn’t very tough, nice and easy to walk.

Although it was our ‘zero’ day yesterday, we still did an unexpected amount of walking along the Sûre river and through the lovely town of Diekirch. A cozy, bustling center with music and the terraces were crowded. We haven’t had this sight for a long time. A few kilometers from the city center we did some shopping and we planned to take the bus back to the campsite. But we hadn’t realized that mouth masks are mandatory on public transportation here, so too bad…. Fortunately, we like to walk and it was a nice walk through parks along the quay.

Today we planned an 18km walk, so this morning we can take it easy. After breakfast we pack our things and at a quarter past 9 we continue our hike along the GR5. The route start along the busy main road, we need to walk behind each other and watch out for trucks and buses. Fortunately we can soon turn left, crossing an old bridge that brings us to quieter roads. The trail ascends through a village into the woods. It’s gets warm already, so the jackets come off and we are passed by a fellow hiker. It turns out she’s also following the GR5 and will hike to the Vosges Mountains. Since we are walking in the same direction, we meet more often during the day.

The route is beautiful and varied, and it’s an easy walk. We’ve decided to shorten the next stages a bit, because it really seems to be worth spending more time along the way and in the villages. This trail ends at a beautiful ruin in Beaufort.

We arrive at a large campground with unexpectedly nice, quiet sites. Two fellow GR5 hikers we’ve encountered a few times now, are also at the campsite. We exchange tips and experiences and help them remove a tick (the most irritating critters for hikers…) It’s nice to meet other hikers!

By the way, at the beginning of our first week we wrote that we just have to follow the white/red marking, all the way to Nice. Unfortunately, in Luxembourg this isn’t the case. Here the marking sometimes varies, but generally is blue/yellow. So we need to pay attention…
